You’re comfortable with disruption, and often welcome it or create it for yourself. That’s an excellent start, but there is always room for refining your strategy and making sure that while comfortable with the risks involved, you’re not going to sink the organization if your attempts go wrong (yes, it still happens to the best of us).
As an intentional disruptor, there are certain imperatives that you must keep in mind at all times. First, and most importantly if you’re serious about leveraging intentional disruption is to come ready with stable counterbalances for the chaos you’re about to call forth. This means steady leaders and managers you can lean on when uncertainty is at its highest. What’s more, make sure your workforce understands your strategy and trusts the vision. Keeping people in the loop, no matter how adventurous, is a good way to instill confidence and stability, even in the wildest times.
Always remember, there’s no such thing as a half-disruptor. If you choose to lead this way, be prepared to go all the way when you do intentionally disrupt. Stopping in the middle of say a hostile takeover of a competitor will only leave you exposed and vulnerable to counter-disruption. And this is not a one-off strategy in which you can flip the switch. Intentional Disruption is a long-term strategy—ethos if you will—and that means having a plan for what comes after you’ve disrupted your company, market, or industry. If you aren’t ready for tomorrow, your efforts to intentionally disrupt are doomed to fail.
Just because you’re predisposed to intentional disruption as a leader doesn’t mean you’re ready to lead that way. Fortunately, Ben Breier has written the playbook for leading intentional disruption, aptly titled Intentional Disruption! Leadership Lessons in Healthcare, Business, and Beyond. To learn how to clear the path for intentional disruption, become an intentionally disruptive leader, and manage the risks and benefits of intentional disruption, explore Ben’s book today.
